History of Taj Mahal

It is a story of love, loss, remorse, none other than a living example of how deeply a man was in love with his wife that even after she remained but a memory, he made sure that this memory would never fade away. It is the history of the Taj Mahal that adds a soul to its magnificence, the very existence which it is made of.

It takes one back to the reign of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan who was intensely in love with his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. She was known to be a Muslim Persian Princesses and he was the son of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, the grandson of Akbar the Great.

At the tender age of 14, Shah Jahan met Mumtaz and they fell in love and five years later in the year 1612, they got married. Their love for each other deepened over the years, from a bud it bloomed into a flower until Mumtaz Mahal an inseparable companion of Shah Jahan died while giving birth to their 14th child in the year 1631.It was in the memory of his beloved wife that Shah Jahan got this magnificent monument built .

Standing tall as a tribute to his love, this monument is today known as the Taj Mahal. The foundation of this colossus piece of spectacular beauty was laid in the year 1631; its walls were etched and finely carved ,crafted and decorated by masons, stonecutters, inlayers, carvers, painters ,calligraphers, dome builders and many artisans who were requisitioned from whole of the empire and also from Central Asia and Iran.

It took almost 22 years to build this epitome of love which we admire today. The final brick of Taj Mahal was etched in the year 1653. Soon after its completion, Shah Jahan was deposed by his son Aurangzeb and was put under house arrest in the Agra Fort.

This mausoleum which looms high is a forever home to their fondness where the two now rest in peace. The legends still linger on and stories retold about this masterpiece, where the mystique still rises giving way to immortality.
